Richard Ortoli is a founding partner of the law firm Sanders Ortoli Vaughn-Flam Rosenstadt LLP. Richard began practicing law in 1980. Drawing on his experience as a lawyer and on an extensive business career, both as an investor and principal, Richard applies real world experience to solving legal issues. His in-depth knowledge of several areas of the law makes him a one-stop shop for clients. Richard specializes in the following areas of law:

He has an extensive domestic and international practice. His international practice services clients based in Italy, France, Greece, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Viet Nam, Canada and Spain among other countries. Representative legal matters Richard has handled include:

  • Purchases by foreign and domestic clients of various U.S. and overseas businesses. The services performed included due diligence, negotiation of contracts, negotiating agreements among partners and recommending the most tax-efficient structures.
  • Sales and acquisitions of U.S. and foreign-based entities, some with foreign subsidiaries.
  • Major investments in U.S. real estate investment in several different states by domestic and foreign-based individuals and entities. The services performed included the acquisition, negotiation of financing, analysis and recommendation of the most tax efficient structures.
  • Setting up offshore structures and trusts for estate planning and asset protection purposes for both domestic and foreign clients.
  • Supervising litigation involving the ownership of various art works.
  • Drafting and negotiating franchise, license, distribution and agency agreements in the United States and abroad.
  • Registration of trademarks in the United States.

He was admitted to the California bar in 1980 and the New York bar in 1982. The son of a French diplomat, Richard was born in Sydney, Australia. He has lived in New Zealand, France, the United States, England, Spain, South Africa, and Brazil and has traveled widely in many other countries. He was educated in New Zealand, England, Spain, France and the United States. He received a B.A. with honors from the University of Leeds, England, in 1971 and a J.D. from Cornell University Law School in 1980. After graduation from the University of Leeds, Richard served as an officer in the French Air Force, retiring with the rank of lieutenant. Richard speaks and writes French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian fluently. He is also very involved in a number of pro-bono activities outside of his legal practice:

  • President of The American Friends of the Musée Fesch, a foundation that raises funds for the Musée Fesch in Corsica.
  • President of the North American Foundation for the University of Leeds, a foundation that raises funds in North America for the University of Leeds and serves as a meeting point for Leeds University alumni in North America.
  • Conseiller des Français de l’Etranger (elected representative of the French living on the East Coast of the United States).

In 2006 the French government awarded Richard the title of Knight of the National Order of Merit, for military and civilian services.
